In the Weeds is an environment that seeks to illustrate a surrealistic, vague assertion of Maltagliati’s ambivalent feelings towards serving in a restaurant. The title of the show is referential to the expression of the same name where a server is overwhelmed with the chaos and extraneous amount of demands. This show in as an immersive experience that allows Maltagliati to reflect upon the service industry’s internal drama and microaggressions. The artist was influenced by 1960’s Arte Povera and a boundary-pushing energy as he incorporated media he never handled in his practice. Many of the works come with stories adhered to them like how a coworker decided to quit while picking parsley or how employees will break at least one glass vessel during a shift.
